Foundational to Understanding the Bible and History January 5, 2006 Pastor Alan (Bozeman, MT) 13 out of 22 found this review helpful
As a pastor for over 30 years, few books have changed my whole understanding of the Bible and life on earth as much as Rushdoony's Institutes of Biblical Law. For those who think the Bible is irrelevant to modern life and culture, you simply must read read this book. This is an incredibly practical study of the Ten Commandments and how it applies to society. This is one of the most profound books I have ever read.
THEOPHILAWSTORY-theology, philosophy, law and history... May 13, 2004 Christopher J. Fry (Visalia, California United States) 14 out of 25 found this review helpful
RJRushdoony's Institutes have transformed me from a pessimistic premillennial dispensationalist to an optimistic victorious postmillennial theonomist. There are only two religions on this earth; Christianity and Humanism. Humanism has a multitude of various names, some even claiming to be Christian. But you will know them by their fruits. There is no area outside of religion. Every thought is religious, so the question is not religion or no religion, but which religion? There is no neutrality. "Repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ" is not a recommendation. It is not an invitation or a suggestion or even good advice. It is a command. Salvation is of the Lord and of His choosing. Those who insist upon "free-will" fail to realize they are committing Adam's sin; insisting that they can determine good and evil...They "choose God" not realizing he has rejected them if they hold to this notion and will not repent of their presumptuous sin. What is the test of whether or not we love God? see John 14:15,21,&23. The starting point of our thinking,(our philosophy),will be either God-centered or it will be man-centered.
Only by Grace can you love the Law September 14, 2005 Brian Sherman (San Diego) 13 out of 24 found this review helpful
This is an amazing study of the 10 commandments and how they impact every area of life. My first few years as a Christian I was in a Calvary Chapel type church and really wasn't taught much about the law so this book was definitely a wake up call to what I thought to be the case. There may be some differences of interpretation between Rushdooney and other scholars but as I've always believed don't throw out the baby with the bath water.
He believes that old testament is binding today unless the law is recinded in the New Testament or no longer binding because of Christ. He also believes that the case laws should be a guide for how we discharge the penalties for those who break the law of God and remain unrepentant. Many who read this will probably think that sounds crazy but I would say to read the book and allow the argumentation to inform your view rather than your initial emotion response.
Each commandment is given thorough attention but from the Reconstructionist point of view. For that definition please go to their website. I'm not a scholar but have a pretty fair knowledge of theology and the Bible and this book has really cemented my love for Gods word and law because of the coherence of the law and its foreshadowing of Christ. Many may disagree with some conclusions he draws but you would still do well to learn from the depths of Rushdoonys knowledge.
In a day and age where I think we lack vision and seriousness to defend ourselves against the attack of secularism, and uniting to speak out against the cultural decay we need to learn from men like Rushdoony who fought against that their whole life. Latte machines and Bikini Baptisms my seem hip but its doing nothing to break the tyranny that is headed our way when the law of God is trampled under foot.
A must read!!! October 29, 2003 8 out of 16 found this review helpful
(I had a hard time signing in under the adult section, so I just wrote my review under the kids section.) I am currently reading this book for school, and I love it!! I am 16 and have read many books that deal with biblical law, but none have made as much sense as Rushdoony's has. My eyes have been opened to many fallacies I have been taught by the church, or society. I would recommend this book to anyone searching for the real truth in all matters.
Good book to have! September 27, 2007 Micah V. Olson (Kamiah, Idaho) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Great framework for viewing biblical law! Can get a bit "wordy" sometimes but it is a great book!
